Chapter 5 · 5.4
Sharing by email with someone without an account
Doesn't the other person have an account in your Nextcloud? Then you can share a file or folder directly with their email address. Nextcloud will then send them an email with a personal link.
How it works
- Open the Share tab for the file or folder.
- Under External shares, type the other person's email address (1).
- Choose the email address from the list that appears.
- Set the permissions, just as with a public link, and save the share.

The recipient receives an email with the link. Each recipient has their own link, so you can revoke access per person.
Email share or public link?
| Sharing by email | Public link | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sends the link? | Nextcloud, by email | You, copy and send it yourself |
| Revoke per person | Yes | Only if you create a separate link for each person |
| Password and expiry date | Yes | Yes |
Please note: doesn't the email arrive? Ask the recipient to check their junk mail folder. If that doesn't help, create a public link and send it yourself, see Creating a public link: viewing, editing, password, expiration date and download limit.
Tip: does the other person also use Nextcloud, whether with WebOké or elsewhere? Then you can share using their Federated Cloud ID, so the file appears directly in their own Nextcloud. See Sharing with someone on another Nextcloud (federated sharing).
